Voting Methods

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Editing the preference schedule for an election.
The applet opens with an arbitrary preference schedule. Bold numbers in the applet can be edited by clicking on the number (clicking a little right of center increases the number; clicking left of center decreases the number), or, for faster editing, by dragging the mouse on either side of the center line. You can modify the "Number of choices" (rows), the "number of distinct ballots" (columns) and the numbers at the top of each column of the preference schedule. To change the order of the entries in a column you swap entries on adjacent cells by clicking on the red triangle between the two cells.

  • Interpreting the results.
You can choose the voting method(s) by clicking on their respective boxes. The results will appear immediately to the right of the preference schedule. For Plurality the applet computes the number of first-place votes for each candidate; for Borda the applet computes the total number of points for each candidate (1 point for last place, 2 points for second to last place, etc.); for Elimination the applet shows the results of the final round; for pairwise the applet shows the number of pairwise comparisons won by each candidate (1/2 a point for a tie).

Bold numbers could be clicked upon. To increase the number, click to the right of its vertical center line. To decrease it click to the left of the line. Dragging the mouse near the center line will accomplish the same task, but faster. Small triangles in the upper right corner of the cells allow swapping adjacent cells contents, thus adjusting the ballots.
