Emergency Care 9/e Meets the New AHA CPR Guidelines

Topic: BVM - Oxygen Volume     p.114 - Left column, top paragraph, lines 6- end of paragraph:
According to American Heart Association guidelines, at least 700-1000 milliliters of air must be delivered to the patient. Lesser volumes may be used (400-600 milliliters) if supplemental oxygen is used and the chest rises adequately. This means that the bag-valve-mask system must be used properly and efficiently.

Topic: Artificial Ventilation, Children     p. 667 - Table 31-4:
Ventilation duration for children over 8 years is 2 seconds.

Topic: Basic Life Support     p. 817 - Table BCLS - 1:

  1. Under Circulation/Assessment, add:
Check for pulse and other signs of circulation (breathing, cough, movement).
  2. Under Circulation/Special Considerations add:
In infants and children with pulse less than 60/min and poor perfusion, begin chest compressions.

Topic: Determining Pulselessness     p. 818 - first paragraph, last two sentences to read:
The adult who has a pulse does not require chest compressions. Also observe the patient for breathing, movement, coughing, or other signs of circulation.

Topic: Rescue Breathing     p. 820 - Table BCLS - 2
Ventilation duration for an adult is 2 seconds.

Topic: CPR      p. 823

  1. Left column, top paragraph, add as last sentence at end of line 11:
Be sure to look for breathing, coughing, and movement as additional signs that circulation is present.
  2. Right column, first bulleted paragraph, first sentence:
To provide ventilations, use mouth-to-mask, mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-nose, mouth-to-stoma methods, or a bag-valve-mask if you are qualified to use it.
Topic: CPR Summary - Adult Patient     p. 825

  3. Deliver Ventilations, both boxes to read: 15:2
  4. Changing positions, box at bottom of left to read:
Topic: CPR for Adults, Children, and Infants     p. 826
  1. Compression rate: 100/min
  2. Each ventilation: 2 seconds
  3. Two rescuer CPR compressions-to-ventilations ratio:
15:2 (5:1 if patient is endotracheally intubated)
  4. Compression depth, infant: 1/2 to 1 inch (newborn approximately 1/3 the depth of the chest).
Topic: Checklist for Pulse and Breathing     p. 827 - Left column, second sentence, lines 3-4:
At this point, you should check for a carotid pulse (no more than 10 seconds).
