Joachim Du Bellay, poète de la Renaissance (16ème siècle), a publié plusieurs recueils de poèmes. Les Regrets, recueil publié par Du Bellay en 1558, après avoir passé plusieurs années en Italie, s'inspirent de l'humanisme des poètes antiques et romains. Favorisant la forme du sonnet, popularisé par l'Italien Pétrarque, Du Bellay expriment sa déception quant à la politique du Vatican et sa nostalgie pour sa patrie.
