Hewlett is an activist and educator who has spent a majority of her professional life writing about and actively working to change public policy on families, parenting, and the workplace. She earned a Ph.D. in Economics from London University and, in the 1970s, taught at Barnard College and Columbia University. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Hewlett’s work focused more directly on advocacy. In the 1970s, she served as Executive Director of the Economic Policy Council, a New York based labor-management "think tank." And in 1993, she founded the National Parenting Association, a nonprofit organization devoted to developing family-friendly policies in and beyond the workplace. Helwett also has served as a consultant to UNICEF, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and is the author of several books including: When the Bough Breaks (for which she was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Prize), A Lesser Life, Child Neglect in Rich Nations, The War Against Parents (with Cornel West), and Creating a Life: Professional Women and the Quest for Children.
