James Q. Wilson

In the 1960s, Wilson began his career as the Shattuck Professor of Government at Harvard University, a position that he held for twenty-six years before moving to UCLA where he was the James Collins Professor of Management from 1985 to 1998. In addition to his work in higher education, Wilson has served on a number of federal committees dealing with public policy, including: as chairperson of the White House Task Force on Crime, as chairperson of the National Advisory Commission on Drug Abuse Prevention, as member of the Attorney General’s Task Force on Violent Crime, and as member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. Well known as a criminologist, economist, and political analyst, Wilson has authored or co-authored more than a dozen texts, including: The Marriage Problem: How Our Culture Has Weakened Families (from which his essay is excerpted); Thinking About Crime; Varieties of Police Behavior; and American Government (the best-selling American government textbook in the country).
