Born in Indianapolis, IN, to a prominent Indiana publishing family, Quayle is perhaps most widely recognized as the former Vice President of the United States under George Bush (1989-1993). He graduated from Indiana University law school in 1974 and almost immediately accepted a position as associate publisher and general manager of the Huntington Herald-Press. Two years later in 1976 his political career officially began when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After a four-year stint in the House, he was elected to the Senate in 1980 and then re-elected in 1986 before being chosen as the Presidential running mate of Bush in 1988. Throughout his political career, Quayle has chaired the Presidents Council on competitiveness (which sought to reduce governmental and environmental regulation of industry) and mounted an abortive run for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination in 1999.
