Visual and Style Analysis
Visual and Style Analysis
This activity contains 5 questions.
In your text, view figure 6-31 of the Roman Garden Scene, detail of a wall painting from the Villa of Livia at Primaporta and figure 7-31, and the mosaic of the
Emperor Justinian and His Attendants,
from the north wall of the apse in the Church of San Vitale, Ravenna. Using these two images, describe what your book means by Byzantine "reverse perspective."
To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.
In your text, view figure 7-32, the image of the
Empress Theodora and Her Attendants,
the mosaic on the south wall of the apse in the Church of San Vitale. The figures are typically stiff and austere. Even when they are engaged in activity (such as the attendant who holds the curtain open or Theodora's offering of her gift) the figures remain still and grand. Looking carefully at details within the picture, including the decoration of the garments worn by the figures, explain why we know that the lack of movement of the main figures was a matter of choice.
