Objectives
After reading this chapter you should be familiar with the following:

  1. The definitions of key terms: Industrial Revolution, Idealism, Romanticism, Marxism, program music, melodrama
  2. An understanding of the context -- technological innovations, philosophical, economic and political trends -- in which Romanticism developed
  3. An understanding of the effect of social changes, including the rise of the middle class, Marxism and developments in philosophy, upon the art of the period
  4. An understanding of the characteristics of Romanticism as an artistic and cultural movement
  5. An undertstanding of Romantic style in visual art and architecture, major works and artists
  6. An understanding of The Arts of the Romantic Age: Literature, including its major works and writers
  7. An understanding of the effect of Romanticism upon music of the period in general
  8. Understanding of the development of musical genres, including piano works, program music, symphonic music and choral music
  9. Identification of the works of art in this chapter, including architecture, visual art, sculpture, music, literature and dance
  10. An understanding of Victorianism: the culture of England, under Queen Victoria, and the larger effects of Victorianism upon the arts and culture of England
