Chapter Overview

This chapter begins by exploring the image of Asian Americans as the “model minority” as well as their political activities. Although often viewed as a monolithic group, the population of Asian Americans is comprised of a great diversity of peoples and cultures. This chapter provides an introduction to the four larger groups—Filipino Americans, Asian Indians, Southeast Asian Americans, Korean Americans—and also to Hawaii and its people. The discussion focuses on the history of immigration for each group as well as the issues they currently face within the United States. The racial and ethnic pluralism of Hawaii is also discussed.
