  1. To understand some of the explanations of why discrimination occurs.
  2. To become familiar with the institutional factors that perpetuate inequality.
  3. To understand the consequences of low-wage labor, including, how a large portion of racial and ethnic minorities are among the working poor.
  4. To learn about the factors that can exacerbate one’s subordinate status.
  5. To understand the origins and purposes of affirmative action programs.
  6. To become familiar with the ways in which members of subordinate groups respond to situations of institutional discrimination.
