Chapter Overview

In the chapter, Schaefer discusses the role of power and privilege in majority relations with a minority, introducing you to the characteristics that define a minority group as well as the social construction and social significance of race categories. Furthermore, you are introduced to the theoretical perspectives of the functionalists, conflict theorists and labeling theorists. The chapter also discusses the creation of dominant and subordinate groups.
