Chapter 17 |
|
This chapter deals with the relationship between mental health problems and the community.
The chapter begins with a discussion of different level of prevention that can be instituted by society, to try to either prevent the onset of problems, to assess and intervene early in the process of psychological maladjustment, or else to wait until disorders fully emerge and then treat them. The distinction between prevention focused on situations, versus person competencies, is also discussed. Also, the chapter discusses logical locations where different types of prevention can be put into place, such as the family, school, and community, and examples of prevention in these different areas are provided. Finally as regards prevention and treatment, the chapter discusses different types of community based service providers, and some of the problems with community treatment.
The second part of Chapter 17 deals with legal aspects of treatment and prevention, with a focus on mental disorders. Such issues as hospitalization, the rights of patients, confidentiality, and the relationship between mental disorders and the law are all reviewed.
The chapter concludes with a final call to the reader to always consider interactions in the onset of mental disorders and their treatment, including the biopsychosocial framework, even in social policy related to mental health and illness.
