Tips for Success

1. Define and give examples of each of the following key terms:

Coefficient of alienation
Coefficient of determination
Correlation coefficient
Correlational research
Cross-sectional method
Descriptive research
Follow-up studies
Interviewer bias
Longitudinal method
Pearson product-moment correlation

2. Using a search engine of your choice, find a web page whose main content is about the effects of age on some psychological variable. Try to determine whether any of the methods discussed in this chapter would be appropriate to explore this area of psychology.

3. Do not memorize the examples, instead, concentrate on trying to understand the goals of each method, and the techniques that are used within that technique.

4. Try to understand how each example used to illustrate a type of qualitative research meets the definition of that type of research.

5. Ask yourself what material from this chapter is crucial to understanding chapter 10.
