Now that you have completed Chapter 2, you should be able to:
  1. Explain what Reichenbach meant by the "discovery phase" in the scientific method.
  2. Describe six hypothesis-generating heuristics that scientists may use as they develop their research ideas.
  3. Develop a research proposal.
  4. Explain the purpose of doing a literature search and the resources that are available for conducting this search.
  5. Explain the difference between theoretical and operational definitions and provide an example of each.
  6. Differentiate between hypotheses and theories.
  7. Discuss the three criteria for acceptable hypotheses.
  8. Explain the difference between a construct and a variable.
  9. Differentiate between independent and dependent variables and provide an example of each.
  10. Explain why any event or condition can be an independent variable or a dependent variable.
