Sites to Explore

Browse the following Web sites to look for topic ideas:

  • Idea Generator
Old Dominion Librarians have prepared a list of topic ideas for many academic fields, including business, education, engineering, and health sciences. Categories | Web Sites | Web Pages | News | Research Documents

Categories will place the topic in broader categories that you might want to explore as well or in addition to your topic.
Web sites will give you a wide range of Internet sites to explore.
Web pages will give you a different sorting of sources. Note that many end in .com -- that means that this link goes to a commercial site, which may be trying to sell you something more than give you solid information.
News will lead you to reports in newspapers and magazines.
Research documents will give you information as both scholarly reports and magazine summaries and commentaries.

By starting your online research with a subject director such as Yahoo!, you will be able to explore a wide variety of research possibilities related to your topic before you use a search engine to find many sources. Narrow your topic by using a subject director and then search for good sources using a search engine.

Chapter 4 explains subject directors and search engines in more detail.
