Introduction

Welcome to the Research Tutorial. This tutorial will help you with the process of finding information and documenting sources for the essay assignments in Reading and Writing in an Online World or for other research projects. It focuses largely on helping you locate, evaluate, and integrate library and Web sources into your writing projects--either documented essays, online research projects, or traditional research papers.

Documented essays such as "problem-solution" essays, argument essays, or exploratory essays usually require the author to support his or her views with additional sources. This tutorial will help you learn how to locate the sources you need. It will also help you learn how to cite or document the sources in your writing.

If you have been asked to write a "research paper" you are probably expected to conduct  more information gathering and background reading than you are accustomed to doing for most essays or reports. Always check with your instructor to make sure that you understand his or her expectations.
