Marion Winik was born May 7, 1958, in New York City. She received a bachelor's degree from Brown University in 1978, and she also attended the University of Texas from 1980 to 1981. In 1983 she received a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from Brooklyn College. In 1993, she received a creative nonfiction fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts; in readers' polls from 1993 to 1996 in the Austin Chronicle, Winik was named best local writer. She received a Notable Book of the Year award in 1996 from the New York Times for First Comes Love. In 1982 and 1983, Winik was a lecturer at the City University of New York. Since 1991, she has been a commentator on All Things Considered for National Public Radio. Winik's works include Nonstop (poetry) 1981; Boy Crazy (poetry and short stories), 1985; Telling: Confessions, Concessions, and Other Flashes of Light (essays), 1994; First Comes Love (memoir), 1996; and The Lunch-Box Chronicles: Notes from the Parenting Underground (memoir), 1998. Additionally, under the pseudonym Miranda Wells, Winik has published a number of works in several newspapers and magazines, including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Redbook, Harper's Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan.
