Born October 12, 1935, in Okolona, Mississippi, William Raspberry received a B.S. degree at Indiana Central College in 1958; he served as a public information officer while in the Army from 1960 to 1962. Raspberry was named Journalist of the Year by Capitol Press Club in 1965 for his coverage of the Los Angeles Watts riot; he also has received honorary degrees from Georgetown University, University of Indianapolis, University of Maryland, and Virginia State University. In addition to being an editor, photographer, proofreader, and reporter, Raspberry taught journalism at Howard University from 1971-73. He has also worked as a TV commentator and panelist. His writings include Looking Backward at Us, 1991, and articles for America, Conservative Digest, Mother Jones, and Reader's Digest.
