English author Lesley Hazleton was born September 20, 1945, in Reading, England; she came to live in the United States in 1979. An honors graduate of Manchester University (1966), she attended Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received a Masters degree in 1971. Hazleton worked as features writer for the Jerusalem Post (1968-1973); she reported for Time-Life Inc. while in Jerusalem from 1973 to 1976. She lectured in psychology at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem from 1970 to 1972, and she was a founding teacher of the Jerusalem Experimental High School (1972-75). She was a distinguished writer in residence at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, in 1986; a visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University in 1989; and a fellow at MacDowell Colony in 1980, 1982, and 1986. Her major works include: Israeli Women: The Reality Behind the Myths, 1978; Where Mountains Roar: A Personal Report From the Sinai and Negev Desert, 1980; The Right to Feel Bad: Coming to Terms With Normal Depression, 1984; Jerusalem, Jerusalem: A Memoir of War and Peace, Passion and Politics, 1986; England, Bloody England: An Expatriate's Return, 1989; and Driving to Detroit, 1998.
