Martin Gottfried was born October 9, 1933, in New York City. He graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1955 and attended Law School, from 1955-57. He served in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence, from 1957-59. He lives in New York and is a member of New York Drama Critics Circle and the Dramatists Guild. He received Rockefeller Foundation grants in 1966 and in 1967; he received the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, in 1968, for A Theater Divided. Gottfried has been a music critic for the Village Voice (1960-62); an editor for Fairchild Publications in New York City (1962-63); and a drama critic for Women's Wear Daily (1963-72), the New York Post (1973-77), the Saturday Review (1977-) and Cue/New York (1978-). His publications include: A Theater Divided, 1968; Opening Nights, 1969; Broadway Musicals, 1979; Jed Harris: The Curse of Genius, 1983; In Person: The Great Entertainers, 1985; Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Men and Their Music, 1988; All His Jazz: The Life and Death of Bob Fosse, 1990; More Broadway Musicals: Since 1980, 1991; Sondheim, 1993; Nobody's Fool: The Lives of Danny Kaye, 1994; George Burns and the Hundred-Year Dash, 1996; and The Director (drama), 1972.
