Stephen Carter was born in 1954 and received a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1976; he received a law degree from Yale in 1979. The United States Jaycees named him one of the ten outstanding young Americans in 1987. He has taught at Yale since 1982; he became a full professor there in 1985 and holds the position of William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law. Before teaching at Yale, Carter served as a law clerk for the Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit, and for the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the author of Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby, 1991; The Culture of Disbelief: How American Law and Politics Trivialize Religious Devotion, 1993; and God's Name in Vain: The Wrongs and Rights of Religion in Politics, 2000. On February 26, 2001, Entertainment Online reported that Carter signed a $4 million deal with Knopf to write two novels; the first is titled The Emperor of Ocean Park.
