Objectives

Historically art was produced for the glorification of a deity, to honor a monarch, and lastly as a means of education or communication. The contributions that came from Greece and Rome are explored, as well as the impact Christianity had in Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic times.

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

• Discuss the development and evolution of art and architecture from Greece, Rome, Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic times.
• Discuss significant contributions of each of these civilizations: Greece, Rome, Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic civilizations.
• Define the terminology associated with the architecture from the Classical through Medieval West periods.
