Objectives

The term sculpture describes artworks that occupy space. These artworks are created through a number of processes. The three basic categories of sculpting are modeling, casting, and carving. Each category is discussed in this chapter. Each of these categories has a number of processes that are associated with them. Descriptions of many of these media and examples are explored to reveal their individual characteristics.

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

• Discuss the difference between freestanding, low-relief, and high-relief sculpture.
• Discuss the processes used in sculpting.
• Discuss the many different types of sculpture.
• List and define the types of sculpture, each according to its own set of characteristics.
• Discuss and define kinetic, mixed media, constructed, assembled, installation, and site-specific sculpture.
• Name some of the leading contributors to the field of sculpture.
