Objectives

In this chapter the authors introduce and explain to the reader the principles of design: repetition, rhythm, scale, proportion, contrast, emphasis, balance, variety, and unity. These principles give us an understanding of how artists work and how artists arrange them in order to communicate a message. These terms can be used to analyze and describe anything from a realistic painting to a nonrepresentational sculpture.

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

• Name the principles of design.
• Describe and define each of the principles of design.
• Discuss how color may affect balance in a work of art.
• Discuss the use of the principles of design when describing a work of art.
