Objectives

In order to understand and appreciate the art and architecture of the world we need to be familiar with their cultures of the world. The Arts of Asia introduces the reader to the religions and cultures of the Far East. Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, and Shinto are discussed, along with the resulting art and architecture in the countries of India, China, and Japan.

After reading this chapter you should be able to:

• Discuss the basic belief systems of Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, and the Shinto religion.
• Discuss the art and architecture associated with India.
