In this chapter the authors introduce and explain to the reader the principles of design: repetition, rhythm, scale, proportion, contrast, emphasis, balance, variety and unity. These principles give us an understanding of how artists work and how artists arrange them in order to communicate a message. These terms can be used to analyze and describe anything from a realistic painting to a nonrepresentational sculpture.
