Movies
Objectives

Movies entertain, inform, and educate, and it is argued that movies both reflect and create popular culture. As the movie industry adapts to new technology, the industry is changing the way viewers are targeted. No longer do movie-goers sit passively in the theater, or watch from home on the VCR, DVD player, or cable pay per view. People are interacting with movies in a new way through official, and not so official, websites. The fundamental theories and purposes of film continue to evolve, and the industry is generating extensive research and study of genre, audience, theory, and more. The essays in this chapter are a small sample of the work being done.

After completing this chapter, readers will be expected to achieve the following learning objectives:
  • examine the issues that concern writers and directors of movies
  • question issues and relationships in the movie industry
  • analyze the characteristics of specific genres in movies
  • understand the difference between a movie review and film criticism
  • explore a range of theoretical perspectives that can be used as support for movie analysis
  • offer examples of analyses that provide models for analysis of movies and the movie industry.
