Bourke-White, Margaret - "There’s No Way Like the American Way”

(1904-1971)

One of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, Margaret Bourke White was instrumental in the creation of Photojournalism as a genre. A graduate of Cornell University, Bourke White began working with photography in college, and later followed her interests into industrial photography. Her work caught the attention of publisher Henry Luce, who hired her first for his new magazine Fortune, and then as one of the first four photographers for Life magazine. One of Bourke White's photographs appeared on the first cover of Life. She has published numerous books, among them Shooting the Russian War (1943), Dear Fatherland, rest quietly (1946), and Portrait of Myself(1963).
