Hughes was one of the premier figures of the Harlem Renaissance-that jubilant outpouring of black art and culture in New York City in the 1920s. Hughes uses the rhythms of jazz, blues, and gospel music to celebrate and probe the role of black people in American society. His collections of verse include The Dream Keeper (1932), The Way of White Folks (1934), Shakespeare in Harlem (1941), and Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951). Web Destinations |
