The Pride of Sarah Worthington

Alice Carey
1820—1871

Alice Carey was born in Mount Heather, Ohio. She was a prolific writer of poetry and fiction, and after the publication of her first volume of poems, she moved to New York City where she hosted literary salons. Carey’s novels and short fiction of small town life in Ohio established her as an important influence in the development of American local color writing. Her short fiction is gathered in Clovernook or Recollections of Our Neighborhood in the West (1852) and Clovernook’s Children (1855).
