Objectives

Chapter 12 covers the basics of preparing your prints for display. It begins with a description of methods for correcting minor flaws in photographs: spotting, etching, and local reduction. The different characteristics of various available mat boards is covered, as are different procedures for adhering or hinging prints to boards. Included is a step-by-step illustrated guide to mounting prints and cutting an overmat. The chapter ends with a discussion of different styles of matting systems commonly used.

After reading this chapter you should be able to:

  1. Spot prints to correct flaws and improve their overall appearance prior to display.
  2. Identify the equipment and supplies used in matting photographs.
  3. Understand how the use of different mats will impact the appearance and longevity of your photographs.
  4. Cut and produce mats in a number of styles.
  5. Understand what overmatting is while becoming familiar with the ways of attaching prints to boards when overmatting.
