Objectives

Chapter 4 is about light, film, sensors, and the relationship between them. Many different types of films used for different purposes and effects are discussed. The chapter covers the relationship between film speed and exposure, the best films to use under a variety of conditions, as well as the affects certain film choices will have on the final print. Types of exposure meters and their use are discussed. The use of infrared film is detailed. The composition of film is described as is the reaction of emulsion to light that results in the creation of an image. In addition, filters and their uses are covered as are the necessary adjustments in exposure when using them.
Differences in proper exposure techniques for negative film, transparency film, and digital images are explained.

After reading this chapter you should be able to:

  1. Know what types and speeds of film to use under various conditions.
  2. Understand the impact of the choice of film on the final print.
  3. Understand the types of exposure meters and metering techniques.
  4. Be familiar with the way film and sensors are constructed.
  5. Understand how black-and-white film records color.
  6. Use filters to deal with color issues, haze, and reflective surfaces.
  7. Be able to adjust exposure to compensate for the loss of light that occurs when using filters.
