Objectives

Chapter 2 provides an overview of different camera formats, as well as the features of both manually operated and automatic operation cameras. It contains a guide of the camera controls, such as aperture and shutter speed, and introduces vocabulary necessary to identify and learn to use the parts of the camera. This chapter also offers brief advantages and disadvantages to using each type of camera, with tips on how to work with the equipment to produce sharp images. After reading this chapter you should be able to:

  1. Identify basic camera controls.
  2. Understand the relationship between the shutter and light.
  3. Understand how to convey motion in a still photograph.
  4. Understand how the aperture of the camera works in relation to light.
  5. Understand the concept of depth of field and how to control it.
  6. Understand how to use shutter speed and aperture to control exposure.
  7. Identify different camera formats and their advantages and disadvantages.
  8. Identify special purpose cameras.
  9. Understand how to use a camera and avoid blur in your images.
