Objectives

Chapter 1 is an overview of digital and 35mm SLR cameras and the terminology used to identify their controls and parts. This chapter explains the basic operations of digital cameras, and manual and automatic 35mm SLR film cameras and how to proceed from viewing the subject through the viewfinder to making an exposure. It covers each step from loading the film or memory card in the camera, taking the picture, to rewinding the film. There are also some basic guidelines offered for shooting your first photographs with either a digital or film camera, and for photographing people and places.

After reading this chapter you should be able to:

  1. Identify the various parts and controls of a digital or 35mm SLR film camera.
  2. Understand the basic principles of how to operate a digital or a manual or automatic 35mm SLR film camera.
  3. Understand the factors that control exposure.
  4. Understand basic guidelines for making successful photographs.
