The modern period led to many changes in culture and the arts. Movements such as romanticism, realism, and impressionism change literature and art. Scientific thought also changed, as the discovery of Darwin's theory of evolution gained popularity and notoriety. The discoveries of scientists such as Pierre and Marie Curie, Gregory Mendel, and others, altered the way that the world functions. Works by Thomas Malthus, among others, predicted populations growth and other sociological ideas. Many political theories also develop during this period. Socialism, communism, and Marxism beaome popular in certain sections of society. Feminism also developed into an important movement, as more and more people begin to demand equal rights for women, including the right to vote. Social equality becomes a concern as well. The period before the outbreak of World War I leads to a rise in the number of intellectual and artistic movements spreading throughout Europe. Thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, and Immanuel Kant discussed theories which alter the world view. Painters such as Monet, Renoir, and Kandinsky evoked discussion and delight throughout the world.
