The Church and the People
Summary

The Church defined peasants' and artisans' everyday existence. Church calendars, rites, holidays, and sacraments, marked the ebb and flow of the seasons and stages of life. This is not to say that all ordinary villagers and townsfolk accepted the Church's teachings without question. Some were drawn to mystical forms of Christianity and others to beliefs that the Church labeled as heretical.
