Sentence Combining
Practice 1

Read each sentence aloud to “hear” a natural pause where the comma splice or fused sentence should be separated by using a period and a capital letter.
On a sheet of paper, rewrite the sentences correctly, underlining the subjects once and the verbs twice.



1. Jim placed the computer on the desk, it started right up.

2. She taught three songs to the class each one took fifteen minutes to learn.

3. She invested in stocks last year the market has dropped significantly since then.

4. Gary spoke for twenty minutes, everyone listened.

5. Auto accidents are a leading cause of mortality they are responsible for thousands of death each year.

6. Debbie bought a new printer, it comes with a two-year warranty.

7. An article about greed in business appeared in the newspaper, tougher penalties are needed for business crimes.

8. Sam forgot to apply suncreen, he now has a serious sunburn.

9. She placed the photograph in a frame the picture now hangs on the wall.

10. The National Weather Service predicts an increase in fires this year this is due to lack of rain.
