Practice 26: Combining Sentence-Combining Options

Before attempting to combine options, gain proficiency in using each one separately. Writers who attempt to combine options before gaining competency in each one are at risk of making their writing worse, not better.

Compound-complex sentences may be created by combining options. These sentences have at least one dependent clause and at least two independent clauses.

Incomplete Idea: Before Ishi died in 1916.
Complete Idea: He was taken to the Museum of Anthropology of UCSF.
Complete Idea: He left a record there of the Yahi way of life.

Compound-Complex Sentence:

clause 7.gif

clause 8.gif

Notice that the sentence above uses the structure and punctuation of both option #5 and #1. After you use two sentence-combining options to create a compound-complex sentence, stop with a period.

Instructions:
Use the two sentence-combining options in parentheses to combine the following clauses.

Example question:
1. Gohar loves to golf.
2. He usually wins.
3. Because he is very talented at the sport. (#2 and #4)

Example answer:
Gohar loves to golf; he usually wins because he is talented at the sport.
