Annie Dillard
(1945 - )

Annie Dillard was born in 1945 in Pittsburgh. She is the author of nine books, including An American Childhood (1987), where this essay originally appeared; The Writing Life (1989), and Holy the Firm (1977). In 1975, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction. Dillard’s writing appears in Atlantic, Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, the Yale Review, American Heritage, and many anthologies. She has received numerous grants and awards, including grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Dillard’s latest book is For the Time Being (1999). She currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, Robert D. Richardson, Jr., who is a biographer of Thoreau and Emerson, and her daughter, Rosie.
