Beryl Markham
(1902 - 1986)

Beryl Markham (1902–1986) achieved renown when she became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from England to America (a journey of over twenty-one hours). Hemingway said of her, "She can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers." In this final chapter of West with the Night (1942), Markham describes the harrowing conditions of this flight.
