Jill Nelson
(1952 - )

Jill Nelson, born in 1952, is a native New Yorker and a graduate of the City College of New York and Columbia University’s School of Journalism. A journalist for fifteen years, she is a frequent contributor to Essence, U.S.A. Weekend, the Village Voice, and Ms. In 1986 she went to work for the Washington Post’s new Sunday magazine as the only black woman reporter in a bastion of elite journalism, an experience she described in Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience (1993). Her latest book is Straight, No Chaser: How I Became a Grown-Up Black Woman (1997). In "Number One!" she reflects on the importance of her father’s influence on her life.
