Charlotte Perkins Gilman
(1860 - 1935)
|
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (18601935) was born in Hartford, Connecticut, into a family that, despite their poverty, made every attempt to give her the advantages of an education. She married an artist, Charles Stetson, in 1884, and after the birth of their daughter the following year, she suffered a nervous breakdown. Her struggle with depression brought her to the attention of an eminent neurologist, whose prescription for a "rest cure" had disastrous consequences (parallel to those experienced by the narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper"). In later life, she became an advocate for social and political reform. Her book Women and Economics (1898) anticipated the work of such feminists as Simone de Beauvoir, a half-century later. She promoted her views through public lectures and in her magazine, The Forerunner, which she edited from1909 to 1916.
