Colonial Williamsburg presents a collection of summaries and biographies about African American slaves in the 18th century. Also of interest is Dunmore's Proclamation attempting to free slaves who remained loyal to Britain at the outset of the Revolution.
- "Hopping John": African Influence on Southern Cooking
This recipe came to America from Africa though the slave trade. It is now the traditional dish served by many Southerners on New Year's Day. It is reported to bring good luck.

Duke University Library's exhibit probes the life experiences of American slaves from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century. Check out "Forced Migration" and "Plantation America" for 18th century documents.
- Memoir of "Job"
Story published in 1734, related by a white-identified author, of a highly placed African and his slave experience in the Americas.

- Another View of Bacon's Rebellion
Robert Beverley, an English nobleman, took a critical view of Bacon's actions, but also noted the need for improved governance and social reorganization in Virginia. As it turned out, African slaves proved to be the keys to both.
