In 1974, he was teaching high school at a private school in Maine when his novel Carrie launched him as one of today's most popular authors. A prolific author, he has published too many books and other types of writing to list here. Some of his most popular works include The Shining, Pet Sematary, The Green Mile, and On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft in 2001, from which this excerpt was taken.
