Born (1947) in Portland, Maine,
Stephen King received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 from the University
of Maine at Orono. In 1974, he was
teaching high school at a private school in Maine when his novel Carrie launched him as one of today's
most popular authors. A prolific
author, he has published too many books and other types of writing to list
here. Some of his most popular
works include The Shining, Pet Sematary,
The Green Mile, and On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft in 2001, from
which this excerpt was taken.
