England, E. M. Forster
(1879–1970)

Born in London, England, E. M. Forster received a B.A. in classics in 1900, a B.A. in history in 1901, and an M.A. in 1910 from King's College at Cambridge University. He published numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including A Room With a View, Howards End, A Passage to India, The Celestial Omnibus, and Abinger Harvest, a 1936 collection of essays from which this excerpt is taken.
