Born (1949) in New York City,
Katha Pollitt received her B.A. from Radcliffe College in 1972. Since 1982, she has worked at the Nation as a literary editor,
contributing editor, and associate editor. Her essays have been published in such periodicals as The New Yorker, the Nation, and the New York Times, and her work has also
been collected into two volumes, the 1994 Reasonable Creatures: Essays on Women and Feminism, and
the 2001 Subject to Debate: Sense and Dissents on Women, Politics,
and Culture. This essay is a
1995 column written as part of her regular series for the Nation.
