Overview

In this chapter, the authors explore developments in various African regions between 1000 and 1800. The initial focus is Africa north of the equator with its Islamic traditions. The text then examines the coming of the Europeans and the development of the Atlantic slave trade along the western coast and central Africa. Finally, the chapter turns to East and South Africa and the effects of the Arab-Islamic and European influences in those regions.
