Feature Summary

Focus on Youth: Sally Brant

Sally Brant was a young indentured servant who worked in a private home in Philadelphia. Her employers, the Drinker family, were particularly concerned about Sally’s behavior and were especially perplexed when the unmarried Sally became pregnant. The Drinkers seemed even more concerned that Sally did not seem to be distressed about her condition. Subsequent immediate events illustrate just how anonymous were the lives of indentured servants.

Think About This

1. Why were the Drinkers so perplexed about Sally Brant’s attitude about her pregnancy?
