Tips for Success

These study tips are designed to clarify key points and help you to avoid errors that students commonly make. Review the Tips for Success as you study each chapter and review them again after you have studied each chapter.

  1. Before beginning Chapter 3, be sure you have mastered the material in Chapter 1 on the shapes of distributions and the material in Chapter 2 on the mean and standard deviation.
  2. Remember that negative Z scores are below the mean and positive Z scores are scores above the mean.
  3. Notice that when using Table 3-1: Normal Curve Areas, that the table repeats the basic three columns twice on the page. Be sure to look across to the appropriate column you need.
  4. To change a proportion into a percentage, multiply by 100. So, a proportion of .13 is equivalent to .13*100 = 13%. To change a percentage into a proportion, divide by 100. So, 3% is a proportion of 3/100 = .03.
