Tips for Success

These study tips are designed to clarify key points and help you to avoid errors that students commonly make. Review the Tips for Success as you study each chapter and review them again after you have studied each chapter.

  1. This chapter pulls together material from numerous previous chapters. Be sure to review (if only briefly) Chapters 3, 4, and 9-13 before tackling this chapter.
  2. Carefully compare Formulas 16-1 (p. 571) and 16-2 (p. 572) and ensure you fully understand their differences.
    • Note that formula 16-1 is for a predicted score and formula 16-2 is for an actual score.
    • The other difference between the formulas is that formula 16-2 includes an error term (e). This error term is added to account for the discrepancy from a perfect prediction of Y.
  3. While reading the chapter, track your understanding by looking back at Figure 16-1 (p. 520) and explaining each of the relationships shown in the figure.
